Have you ever tried to take a picture while standing in a crowd only to come away with nothing but a photo of the back of someone’s head?
Have you ever tried to take picture from a bridge or ledge only to discover that you couldn’t get your camera out far enough from the edge to photograph your intended target?
If either of these situations apply to you, I have a simple solution for you…
Attach your camera to a monopod and use it to extend your camera way above the tallest heads in a crowd or way past the edge of a bridge.
A monopod is basically a sturdy “stick” that is used to help steady your camera when the use of a tripod is either impractical or not allowed at a given venue. But with a little ingenuity you can also use it to extend the length of your arms and reach.
Of course you’ll need some way to release the shutter on your camera in order to capture your images, and you basically have two options:
1 – Use your camera’s self-timer to take the photos.
2 – Use a wireless remote or long shutter release cable.
Now, all of the above being said, here are a few things to keep in mind:
1 – Be sure to use a monopod and mount that are sturdy enough to safely support your camera without you having your hands on it.
2 – Don’t use this technique with an expensive camera that would cause you some serious heartache if it were to get damaged. After all, accidents and mischief happen, especially when in the midst of a crowd of strangers.
3 – If you’ll be extending your camera off a bridge, ledge or some other high structure, it might be wise to tether your camera to your body with a length of parachute cord or some kind of strong, but light rope. As they say, “better safe than sorry”.
Bottom line: Why settle for a poor shot simply because your arms are too short? Get yourself a monopod and get the shot you want, every time!
