Question from Anicka T.: I recently noticed that Amazon was selling the ASUS ROG G751JL FHD laptop for $200 off, so I orderd one. I received it this morning.
When I ordered it Amazon said it qualifies for the free upgrade to Windows 10, but I don’t see the icon to click to upgrade it, and I don’t see an upgrade for it in Windows Update either.
Is there something special that I need to do in order to install the Windows 10 upgrade?
Rick’s answer: Hi Anicka. First of all, that’s a fantastic laptop! I hope you get lots of great use out of it.
To answer your question, there are indeed a few things you’ll need to do in order to update your new laptop to Windows 10:
1 – Ensure that your pre-installed Windows 8 installation is up to date by running the Windows Update utility.
2 – Update your laptop from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 by clicking the Windows 8.1 Update tile in the Windows Store, then install all available Windows 8.1 updates by running the Windows Update utility.
3 – After Windows 8.1 has been installed and updated with the latest updates, you should see the “Get Windows 10” icon in the notification area. Click that icon to install the Windows 10 update.
I know that’s a long, winding path to have to follow just to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 10, but unfortunately that’s the way you’ll have to do it because you cannot upgrade directly from Windows 8 to Windows 10. You must update to Windows 8.1 first.
I hope this helps Anicka. Good luck!
Update from Anicka: I installed the Windows 8.1 update and then I got the “Get Windows 10” icon just like you said I would. Getting ready to install Windows 10 now! Thanks for your help Rick.
