Q&A: Can I switch back to Windows 10 if I end up not liking Windows 11?

Question from Melanie: For some time now Windows Update has been prompting me to update my PC from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

I’ve been putting this off because I’ve heard that lots of people who switch to Windows 11 end up hating it but they’re stuck with it because you can’t go back to Windows 10.

I was talking to a friend about this and she said that’s not true because you can actually go back to Windows 10 if you end up not liking Windows 11.

At this point I don’t know what to believe. I’d like to give Windows 11 a try but only if I’ll have the option to revert back to Windows 10 if I end up not liking it.

Question from Michael: I recently bought a new desktop computer to replace the one I’ve been using for the past six years.

It seems like the updates I’ve been installing on this new machine have all been filled with bugs because almost every time I install them something goes wrong.

The last time it happened my nephew had to completely reinstall Windows for me.

The problem I’m having is all the icons scattered around the screen make it hard to enjoy the photo.

Folks often ask me to recommend a good book for helping them learn some new computer topic, and I almost always steer them towards the “for Dummies” series of books if there is a title available on the topic in question.

Although the titles in this series include the word “Dummies”, these books don’t speak down to readers or assume they are absolutely “clueless”.

Instead, they present the material in a clear, easy-to-understand way so that anyone can learn what they need to learn about the topic as quickly and easily as possible, even if the reader does happen to be “clueless” about the topic.

Q&A: Can I safely disable User Account Control in Windows?

Question from Charles: I updated my PC from Windows 10 to Windows 11 a while back.

Ever since then I’ve been getting “User Account Control” warnings several times a month, and I ALWAYS get them when I’m trying to install something new or make a simple settings change.

I can’t seem to do hardly anything at all with getting hit with a warning.

I know that UAC is meant to prevent me from doing something stupid and trashing my system, but I’m an experienced user and I know which types of things I need to avoid.

My question is do you think it would be safe to disable UAC? I really don’t think I need it. [Read more…]
