How to make KidzSearch the default search engine on your child’s computer

Posted on March 23, 2019

Do you have a young child who uses a computer of his/her own?

If so, you probably know that the major search engines make it very easy for your child to stumble upon web pages, photos and other content that are more suitable for teenagers and adults while searching for “kid” topics.

There are a number of great child-safe search engines out there, and I’ve tried a bunch of them over the years. After all my testing, I must say the one I like best is KidzSearch.

KidSearch is powered by Google, regarded by many to be the best search engine on the planet.

That means your child will get the best search results possible for most any query without having to be subjected to all the nasties that lurk about on the Internet.  [Read more…]

Q&A: What happened to the ‘View Image’ button on Google Images?

Posted on February 16, 2018

Question from Byron L.:  I’m a photographer and I use Google Images a lot to check out photos taken by other photographers. I get a lot of inspiration from looking at their photos.

I’ve always heard that it’s safer to view the photos in Google Images by clicking on the “View Image” button instead of visiting the websites directly, and that’s what I always do.

But this morning I noticed that the “View Image” button is no longer available on Google Images.

Why is it missing, and is there any way to get it back?

Google to start penalizing pages that display interstitial ads and pop-ups

Posted on December 13, 2016

If you own a blog or other type of website, you probably know how important it is to rank well in the Google search results.

Like it or not, the majority of a typical site’s visitors usually come from Google. That means anything that causes your site’s pages to tank in the Google search results is a bad thing indeed!

Last month Google announced that they’ll soon start ranking web pages based upon the content found on the mobile versions of the websites “crawled” by their bots. Well, now they’re taking their emphasis on mobile friendliness to an entirely new level.

Here is a direct quote from a recent Google blog post:  [Read more…]

Bing to start giving “Mobile Friendly” sites higher priority in their search results

Posted on May 18, 2015

bing-logoBack in February Google announced plans to start giving “mobile friendly” web pages higher prirority in their mobile search results.

That makes plenty of sense to me. After all, if I’m searching for info while using my smart phone, I would prefer that Google recommend pages that are optimized for my phone’s small screen.

Well, now Bing is getting ready to jump onto the “mobile friendly” bandwagon. Microsoft has just announced that they will be rolling out changes similar to those made by Google within the next few months.  [Read more…]

StartPage – Search the web without being tracked

Posted on January 12, 2015

Google is by far the most used search engine on the web, but it’s far from the only one. In fact, there are many excellent search engines out there.

If you value your privacy, I suggest giving StartPage by ixquick a try.

Unlike Google and the other popular search engines, StartPage doesn’t track your searches in any way.

No storing cookies, no retaining your search history in a database. They don’t log your IP address or use any other  tracking method whatsoever.

In a nutshell, once you’ve completed your search with StartPage and clicked on your chosen result, your search session is over and StartPage doesn’t even “remember” that you were ever there.

Why not visit StartPage right now and give it a try?

Bonus tip: Google has removed the “View Image” button from their image search results, but StartPage still has it on theirs!
