Q&A: Does Windows 10 really need an antivirus app?

Question from Marge:  I just bought a refurbished laptop with Windows 10 on it and I want to make sure it’ll be safe from viruses.

It seems like I remember reading somewhere that you don’t need to buy an antivirus program for Windows 10 because it comes with one built-in.

The problem is other things I’ve read said you do need to install and antivirus program.

Q&A: Is DriverUpdate really malware?

Question from Rhonda:  I bought a new laptop a while back and my son installed DriverUpdate by Slimware Utilities and several other programs on it to keep it running smoothly.

Everything was fine until the other day when I downloaded Malwarebytes.

Every time I run Malwarebytes it flags DriverUpdate as malware and tries to remove it.

Microsoft is set to abandon Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7 in January

Microsoft will be ending support for Windows 7 in January 2020, and that move will leave Windows 7 users with a very important choice to make.

If you have a Windows 7 PC one of the choices you’ll have available to you is to take your chances and keep using Windows 7 even after Microsoft stops releasing critical security updates for it.

I don’t really recommend that due to the reasons stated in the post I linked to above, but if you decide to forge ahead with Windows 7 anyway you can reduce the significant security risk a bit by using a really good antivirus and anti-malware product.
