Review: Toshiba Satellite C55-C5240 15.6 Inch Laptop

Posted on June 20, 2015

toshiba-satellite-c55-c5240Now that we are living in an era of $200 laptops, it’s good to know that we can still pay a bit more and get a much faster and more reliable machine.

The truth is you don’t have to settle for an Atom or Celeron CPU when you can have a laptop that’s equipped with a fast Intel Core i5 without breaking the bank!

The Toshiba Satellite C55-C5240 is a fantastic laptop that easily offers a computing experience far above what you could ever hope to get from any $200 machine. It’s fast, and it comes with a sharp, crisp 15.6 inch screen and plenty of RAM and hard drive space. In fact, it comes with all of this and more:  [Read more…]

Q&A: What’s the best way to run Linux without installing it on my hard drive?

Posted on February 24, 2015

Question from Evan L.:  Hi Rick. First of all, I love your site and all the great info you post here. Thanks so much!

And now on to my question. I just finished reading your post about replacing Windows with Linux to speed up an older computer, and I’d love to give Ubuntu a whirl on my Acer S3-391-6046 Ultrabook.

I don’t want to install Ubuntu on my hard drive because the drive is so small (and full) that I’d have to wipe out Windows 8.1 to make room for it, and I don’t even know if I’ll like using Linux or not.

I know that you can run Ubuntu from either a CD or a USB Flash Drive, but I have no idea which way to go on that. What do you recommend?

Pick up an Acer Chromebook C720 and get free shipping!

Posted on January 23, 2015

acer-c720-chromebookIn an effort to bring Chromebooks (laptops running the Google Chrome operating system) to the masses, Acer has decided to sell the Chromebook C720 for a great price, and the shipping is free!

This is a great deal on a very capable laptop for those who use their PCs primarily for Internet use, checking emails, Facebooking, etc.

As one might expect, the Chromebook C720 isn’t the fastest or most capacious laptop on the market (after all, it does cost about $200), but it does what it was intended to do very well – the uses mentioned above.

Here’s what you’ll get:  [Read more…]

Review: Dell Inspiron i3531-1200BK 15.6-Inch Laptop

Modern laptops are becoming more powerful all the time. More RAM and hard drive space along with faster CPUs make many of them true desktop replacement PCs, and there seems to be no end to the enhancements in sight.

But not everyone needs the fastest, most powerful laptop on the block. If you just need a laptop that does a good job at surfing the Internet, checking email, watching Youtube videos and making simple edits to photos, a good budget model should serve you quite well.

The Dell Inspiron i3531-1200BK (#ad) is a 15.6 inch laptop that will do everything mentioned above, and more. While it won’t be setting any speed records, it’s plenty fast enough and powerful enough to do what the average Internet user needs for a budget laptop to do.  [Read more…]

Q&A: MacBook Air or MacBook Pro – Which is better for a college student?

Question from Alveda F.:  Hi Rick. My daughter is a college freshman. Her laptop was stolen a few days ago during a visit to the library and she needs to replace it.

Price is an issue, but it’s important to me that she get the best computer for her needs even if it costs a little more.

I know they are more expensive than Windows laptops, but her friends have convinced her that she needs to buy a MacBook. That’s fine with me, but she’s confused about which model to get.

Her choice is basically between a MacBook Air (#ad) and a MacBook Pro. (#ad)

Which do you think would be better for her? She’s a History major if that makes any difference.
