Want faster Internet on your smart phone or tablet? Use Opera Mini!

Posted on March 8, 2017

opera-mini-logoIf you use the standard web browser that came pre-installed on your smart phone, you’re wasting your time. And I mean that literally. That’s why you need Opera Mini.

Opera Mini is a lean, super-fast version of the popular Opera web browser that loads web pages and photos much faster than the standard mobile web  browser.

It achieves these faster speeds by compressing all the images on a web page right on a dedicated Opera server, then sends the optimized pages to your phone. When you first click a link you’ll notice a slight delay while the server is optimizing the images, but then you’ll see the page load onto your screen in a jiffy. [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I stop receiving the responses to a group text on my iPhone?

Posted on October 21, 2016

ios-messaging-iconQuestion from Billie P.:  I was included in a group text last night and I spent the next hour and a half listening to my iPhone beep almost constantly as the responses came in.

I wasn’t even interested in the subject they were discussing but the beeps kept coming anyway. It annoyed me so much I ended up turning my phone off.

Is there any way to block everyone’s responses to a group text on an iPhone 6s?

Q&A: How do I exclude the pictures on my iPhone from my iCloud backups?

Posted on September 19, 2016

icloud-logoQuestion from Taylor K.:  Hi Rick! I have a question about iCloud backups that I hope you can answer for me.

I took your advice and set my iPhone to automatically back everything up to iCloud. Today I noticed that my backups have just about used up all my iCloud storage, and most of that space is taken up by my pictures.

Is there any way to exclude the pictures on my iPhone from the iCloud backups? I always copy the pictures I take to my computer anyway so I don’t really need them backed up to iCloud too.

Why Apple lost the war with the FBI over the terrorist’s iPhone (and yes, they did lose)

Posted on March 29, 2016

As you probably know, the FBI asked Apple to help them recover the data from the iPhone that belonged to one of the San Bernardino attackers, but they refused to help.

Ultimately, it appeared that Apple would end up winning that battle in court, and I believe they would have had the legal battle been allowed to run its course. But now that won’t be necessary.

The FBI announced yesterday that they were able to break into the phone anyway with the help of a third party.  [Read more…]

Apple apologizes for intentionally bricking customers’ iPhones (and releases a fix)

Posted on February 23, 2016

iphone-6-plusA couple of weeks ago I wrote a post explaining how you could brick your iPhone 6 by having it repaired by anyone other than Apple’s own techs.

To recap, Apple recently released an update to iOS that caused any iPhone 6 that was repaired by a third-party repair shop to freeze up and display a permanent “Error 53” the next time it was booted up.

Apple’s response to the thousands of customers who asked the company to fix the error was, in effect, “Sorry, but you’ll have to buy a new phone”.  [Read more…]
