I’ve written several posts in the past explaining how you can speed up your computer dramatically by replacing its hard drive with a Solid State Drive (SSD).
Installing an SSD is, quite literally, the best single upgrade you can make on virtually any computer. That being said, installing an SSD in a laptop does have a downside…
Byte for byte, large capacity SSDs are still relatively expensive when compared to hard drives with similar capacities, and since most laptops only have one drive bay, leaving your larger hard drive installed to hold your data isn’t usually an option.
Of course you can always replace your laptop’s internal hard drive with an SSD, then plug in an external USB hard drive (#ad) to store your data files on, but that can be a little inconvenient when you travel and need to access all of your files while on the road.
Well, now you have a another option. You can replace your laptop’s hard drive with a Solid State Hybrid Drive (SSHD) (#ad) and enjoy much of the super-fast speed advantage of an SSD while still having plenty of space on the internal drive for your vast collection of data files!
In my opinion, the concept of a hybrid drive is pure genius. Just take a standard spinning hard drive and augment its storage space with just enough solid state flash memory to hold your system’s most-used snippets of code. The result is SSD-like startup times combined with lots of storage – at a price that is extremely affordable.
For example, right now you can pick up a 2TB SSHD for well than $100, with shipping included. Install it in your laptop and watch your system move into overdrive without sacrificing a bit on storage space!
Bottom line: If you want to inexpensively upgrade your laptop to SSD-like performance while still having plenty of storage space for your programs and files, a Solid State Hybrid Drive is a great way to go!
