If you use the popular Snapchat messaging app there’s a good chance that your username and phone number could be in the hands of criminals right now.
Snapchat has announced that a recent security breach has allowed the usernames and phone numbers of 4.6 million registered users to be stolen by hackers.
While this breach isn’t anywhere near as serious as most of the ones that have been in the news lately, it could still cause problems for the unlucky victims.
For instance, if you’re one of the 4.6 million who had their info stolen and you start receiving phone calls from strangers offering to sell you something or trying to get you to sign up for a service, it will almost certainly be a scammer on the other end of the line.
A new website called Snapcheck.org has been set up to help users find out whether or not they are among the Snapchat users who had their information stolen. If you have a Snapchat account, simply visit the site and enter either your username or phone number. You’ll be alerted immediately if you are one the unlucky victims.
