Today’s Quick Tip….
How to keep library ebooks past the “due date”
Note: Today’s ‘Quick Tip’ was submitted by Bob, a subscriber to this newsletter:
I use a ‘retired’ cell phone on which to download ebooks that I know I won’t finish before the due date.
Cellular service is not available on it but WiFi service still works.
We get ebooks on Bridges Overdrive from our local public library. They are available for 14 days after which they are removed from one’s reader.
By downloading an ebook on my retired cell phone and then turning the WiFi off, I have the book for as long as I want it.
It is important not to turn the phone’s WiFi back on if the book has expired or it will disappear when the reader app is updated.
Thanks for the great tip, Bob. Much appreciated.
In case you’re wondering, I did a little research and found that you don’t have to worry about the possibility that another library patron won’t be able to ‘check out’ the ebook while it’s still loaded onto your device.
Once the ‘due date’ arrives the library’s computer system will automatically mark the ebook as ‘returned’, making it available for another patron to check out and read.
Of course this likely won’t be an option for your regular smartphone since you’ll probably need to turn on WiFi at times.
But if you have an unused smartphone or tablet laying around you can put it to good use as an an ebook reader, both for ebooks from your local library and Kindle ebooks from Amazon (using their complimentary Kindle app).

Rick’s Daily Pick…
Irongear Monitor Stand Riser with Drawers (#ad)
Do you do your own computer upgrades and repairs?
If not, do you plan to start?
If the answer to either of those questions is yes, you really need to invest a few bucks in a good anti-static wrist strap to protect your sensitive computer gear from damaging static discharges.
The good news is you won’t need to spend a ton of money to get one. This little gem from iFixit costs about the same as a burger and fries at your local fast food joint, but it’s still one of the best ones you can buy.

More people live in one U.S. state than the entire country of Canada.
Canada is the second largest country in the world, but it has fewer people living within its borders than this one U.S. state.
