Today’s quick tech tip….
How do I remove Norton antivirus software from my PC?
Question from Alice: I just bought a new Windows 11 laptop and it came with a trial version of Norton 360 antivirus software pre-installed on it.
The thing is, I prefer using Malwarebytes Premium as my antivirus and I’m already paid up for almost a year.
I tried to uninstall the Norton software several times but it always stops and says the removal failed.
How can I get rid of Norton 360 so I can install Malwarebytes?
Rick’s answer: I don’t blame you for wanting to use Malwarebytes instead of Norton, Alice. Malwarebytes just offers better overall protection in my humble opinion.
To answer your question, this is a common issue with most antivirus programs, not just Norton.
For whatever reason, these things sometimes simply refuse to allow themselves to be removed via Windows’ native software removal tool.
But don’t worry, you can easily get Norton 360 0ff of your new PC with the help of Norton’s handy “Remove and Reinstall Tool”.
Simply visit this page on the Norton website and follow the instructions provided for downloading and using the tool.
Just make sure you click Advanced Options and select Remove Only. Otherwise the Norton software will be removed and then immediately reinstalled.
And now, here’s a bonus tip…
As I said above, this is a common issue with most antivirus products, therefore most of them supply removal tools similar to Norton’s.
If you ever have a different antivirus program that refuses to be uninstalled, simply Google the term [product name] removal tool and you’ll be able to find it.
For example, if you’re trying to uninstall McAfee Antivirus just Google McAfee removal tool. One of the first few search results should link to a page where you can download that product’s removal tool.
