Posted on August 22, 2017

icloud-logoJust as with a traditional laptop or desktop computer, it’s important to always have a current backup on hand for your mobile devices in case you ever have to restore your files.

Thanks to Apple’s popular cloud storage service known as iCloud, keeping your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch backed up is as easy as 1-2-3. And trust me, there will come a time when you will need it.

Here’s how to enable automatic iCloud backups on your Apple device:  [Read more…]

These days most people seem to prefer laptops over desktop computers, and for good reason. Laptops are portable and they can easily be taken along when traveling.

That being said, some people (myself included) still prefer using a desktop machine while we’re at home or working in the office.

There are several outstanding mid-range desktops on the market right now, one of which is the sleek and powerful Acer Aspire TC.

I’ve used and tested a lot of desktop computers in my day, and I can honestly say this is one of my  favorites. It offers plenty of power for the money, and it’s a joy to use.

First, let’s take a look at the specs:  [Read more…]

Q&A: How do I prevent ‘Offline Maps’ from automatically updating?

Posted on August 16, 2017

Question from Rina G.:  I recently started running out of storage space on my laptop so I did some investigating.

Apparently the “Offline Maps” app is filling up the SSD every time it updates. The SSD is only 32GB so storage space is tight as it is.

How can I disable these automatic updates? This laptop is running Windows 10.

Q&A: Is there any way to make Chrome show passwords as you type them?

Posted on August 15, 2017

showpassword-extension-logoQuestion from Julia V.:  I have a question about passwords Rick.

I use pretty long passwords that contain special characters. I often make a mistake when typing a password and have to re-enter the password again. That’s very frustrating to say the least.

Is there a setting in Chrome that will let you review a password you typed before pressing the Enter key or clicking the Login button?

Q&A: Do I need to replace a hard drive that fails the SMART Check?

Posted on August 13, 2017

bad-hard-driveQuestion from Eugene N.:  Rick, I have a 2 year old laptop computer that I fear might have a failing hard drive. I’m a professional photographer and I primarily use this PC for editing my photos.

Everything was working fine until late last night, but now every time I turn the computer on I get an error stating that the hard disk is in danger of failing and I need to run the hard disk test in system diagnostics.

When I run the disk test it says “SMART Check: FAILED”. Do you think I need to just go ahead and have the hard drive replaced or is there a way to fix this error?

I sprung for a 2 year extended warranty when I bought the laptop, but I’m not sure it’ll cover the repair if it turns out to be a software problem. I’m not worried about losing any data though because I create a new system image after I download the photos from every shoot.
