Today’s quick tech tip….
Q&A: Could anything bad happen if I unfollow a friend on Facebook?
Question from Lois: I read this blog post that said you can unfollow a “problem” Facebook friend to stop getting their posts in your newsfeed without having to completely unfriend them.
I have an irritating friend that I love in real life, but on Facebook she posts a lot of nasty political stuff that really irritates me. I don’t want to unfriend her but I do want to stop seeing her posts.
Are there any negative consequences that can arise from unfollowing someone on Facebook?
I really don’t want to put my real-life friendship with this woman at risk because she was really good to me every time I needed someone to help me through a crisis.
Rick’s answer: I have some good news for you, Lois…
The only thing unfollowing someone does is prevent their posts from showing up in your Facebook Newsfeed. That’s it – nothing else.
Your unfollowed friend will still receive your posts in her own Newsfeed (and she’ll be able to react to them and comment on them). The two of you will still be able to chat with one another via Messenger as well.
You’ll still be able to check out her Facebook posts at any time by visiting her Timeline page, but that’s the only way you’ll ever see them as long as she remains “unfollowed”.
And finally, if you’re worried about the possibility that Facebook might alert your friend to the fact that you unfollowed her, don’t be. They won’t.
In short, you can unfollow your “problem” Facebook friend with no negative repercussions whatsoever.
