Today’s Quick Tip….
GoDaddy data breach affects over a million customers
It seems like there’s a never-ending stream of data breaches these days, and this latest one is big.
In this filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) GoDaddy reported that 1.2 million active and inactive user accounts of customers of their Managed WordPress services have had their passwords, email addresses and other data items stolen by hackers.
Luckily, GoDaddy discovered the breach fairly quickly and they have already changed the stolen passwords.
This is just another example of why it’s so important to enable Two-Factor Authentication on every online account that supports it (and most accounts do these days).
If you’re a GoDaddy Managed WordPress customer you’ll need to keep a close eye on your site’s WordPress installation to make sure nothing was changed or added to the site before GoDaddy had a chance to change the affected passwords.
I also recommend that you be on the lookout for phishing attempts since so many email addresses were stolen.
Bottom line: If your GoDaddy-hosted website hasn’t been altered in any way you should be in the clear on that front since the stolen passwords have already been changed. Just make sure you remain vigilant against potential phishing attacks.
