Today’s quick tech tip….
How to check for stubborn malware with Microsoft Defender Offline
If you’re a long-time Windows user you’ve probably had to deal with a malware infection in the past. And if you haven’t already, chances are you will at some time in the future.
Modern antivirus and anti-malware tools are the best they’ve ever been, but they certainly aren’t prefect. At some point you’re probably going to find that malware has made its way onto your PC.
Your regular antivirus software will likely find and remove any nasties that eventually manage to infect your machine, but some malware strains are quite stealthy, making them very difficult to detect and remove while the PC is up and running Windows.
If you ever suspect that your Windows PC is infected but a regular antivirus scan doesn’t find anything, I recommend that you run Microsoft Defender Offline to see if it can track it down.
Microsoft Defender Offline loads into memory and runs before Windows has even had a chance to load, making it a lot easier to root out and remove stubborn malware.
Here’s how to use Microsoft Defender Offline in Windows 11:
1 – Save any open files and close all running apps and programs.
2 – Right-click the Start button, then select Settings.
3 – In the left-hand pane, click Privacy & security.
4 – In the right-hand pane, click Windows Security.
5 – Click Virus & threat protection.
6 – Click the Scan options link, then select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) and click Scan now.
Here’s how to use Microsoft Defender Offline in Windows 10:
1 – Save any open files and close all running apps and programs.
2 – Right-click the Start button, then select Settings.
3 – Click Update & Security.
4 – Click Windows Security.
5 – Click Virus & threat protection (a new window will open).
6 – Click the Scan options link, then select Microsoft Defender offline scan and click Scan now.
