Lots of folks daydream about working from home and making a decent living while avoiding much of the stress of the business world.
Well, I can tell you from personal experience that it can be done, by virtually anyone – but success is rarely achieved overnight.
Truth be told, it typically takes a new blog about a year to start earning serious money. That’s why you’ll probably need to keep your day job while you’re learning the ropes and growing your blog to a profitable level.
But the above being said, once a blog gains traction it can really take off in a hurry! For me, that approximately one year wait was more than worth it!
There are plenty of ways to make a living from a home office, a basement shop, or even your kitchen table, but to be truly successful you’ll need two things:
1 – The drive and ambition required to work successfully without the benefit of directions from a boss, and…
2 – The skills and/or equipment required to fill a real need in the marketplace.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to choosing a niche to fill, but a great place to start is to simply analyze the skills and experiences you already have.
For example, if you spent years working in a furniture factory, you might be able to parlay your woodworking skills into a successful custom handcrafted furniture business.
While it’s possible to succeed by creating physical products in your own private shop, most people find it much easier to do some type of computer-based work. I’ll use my own situation as an example.
After working for many years in the IT field, I decided to try my hand at blogging about technology.
I suppose the jury is still out when it comes to determining how successful I’ve been, but I can tell you that I really enjoy what I do and I’ve been able to avoid the rat race for several years now.
Blogging is something that virtually anyone with a computer and an Internet connection can do.
While decent writing skills are a plus, you don’t have to be an English major or even a fantastic writer.
All you really need in order to succeed as a blogger is a passion for the topic(s) you write about and the ability to express yourself in a way that keeps the reader interested and engaged.
The key here is to find a niche in the information marketplace that needs to be filled, then start writing regular blog posts that fill those needs and pique the interests of the people who share an interest in that niche.
Truth be told, the hardest part about becoming a successful blogger is deciding what you want to write about!
Thousands of bloggers make anywhere from $1,000 to $50,000 per month, with the top bloggers pulling down six figures each and every month!
While the most ultra-successful bloggers are real go-getters who have earned a reputation for being among the best in their niches, there are countless others who are content to earn an extra $100 – $500 per month working from home part time to supplement their regular incomes.
Plenty of others make more.
Bottom line: How far you can take a potential blogging career will depend on your ability to engage your audience with your posts and the level of desire you have to succeed.
