Today’s quick tech tip….
How to unfreeze a ‘frozen’ Mac
A while back I wrote this post explaining how to restart a ‘frozen’ Windows PC.
Several folks who read that post have asked me if it’s also possible to unfreeze a ‘frozen’ Mac.
Well, the answer is yes. In fact, there are a couple of things you can do to get a frozen Mac back into working order.
First, you can to try find out which app is causing the problem and force it to stop running.
If successful, that will free up the frozen Mac without losing any unsaved work that might be waiting in other apps.
To give this a try, just follow the steps below:
1 – Press the Command+Option+Esc key combination do display the “Force Quit Applications” dialog box.
2 – If you see an app that’s listed as “Unresponsive”, click on that app to select it, then click the Force Quit button.
3 – Repeat step 2 for any other apps that might be listed as “Unresponsive”.
If one or more unresponsive apps were causing the issue your Mac should now be back to normal.
At this point I recommend that you save any unsaved data and then restart the machine.
If force-quitting frozen apps didn’t solve the problem, it’s time to “go nuclear” and make the machine do a forced shutdown. Here’s how:
1 – If you have a Mac with an actual “Power” button, press and hold the Power button until the machine shuts down.
After the shutdown is complete, wait about 30 seconds or so and then press the Power button again to start the machine back up.
2 – If you have a MacBook that has a “Touch ID” sensor, press and hold the Touch ID sensor until the machine shuts down.
After the shutdown is complete, wait about 30 seconds or so and then press the Touch ID sensor again to start the machine back up.
