How to get the most accurate results from an Internet speed test
Regular readers of this newsletter know I frequently recommend running an Internet speed test with SpeedTest.net to make sure you’re getting the Internet download and upload speeds that you’re paying for.
The thing is, these tests need to be run correctly in order to get the most accurate results. This is what I recommend…
If at all possible, conduct the test on a laptop or desktop computer that’s connected to your router or gateway via a physical Ethernet cable.
Why? Because in most situations a wired connection is going to be faster than a WiFi connection when both are accessing the Internet through the same router or gateway.
If you simply must run the speed test on a mobile device, conduct the test with the test device in close proximity to the router or gateway to ensure that you’re running the test over the fastest WiFi connection possible.
Regardless of how you connect the test device to the router or gateway, make sure that device is the only device that’s currently connected to the router.
First, disconnect the Ethernet cable from every device that’s using a wired Ethernet connection except for the device that’s running the test.
Next, either place every device that connects via WiFi in Airplane mode or completely shut those devices down until the test has run it course.
And finally, run the speed test at least three times using a different remote server each time. This is important because the test results will at least in part depend on the data transfer speeds of the connections to the servers themselves (some servers will have faster connections than others).
If possible, be sure to select the three servers that are located closest (as the crow flies) to your physical location.
