Today’s featured tech tip….
Beware games and quizzes on Facebook
Have you ever noticed how many games and quizzes there are on Facebook?
Well, what most people don’t know is many of those games and virtually ALL of the quizzes exist for one reason, and one reason only. And that reason isn’t to help you pass the time or have fun online.
Truth be told, the purpose of many games (and virtually all quizzes) is to separate you from your hard earned money and/or collect your personal information so the app developer can sell it to online marketers.
Yes, I know it can be entertaining to “find out what your animal spirit is” or “which celebrity is your virtual twin“, but the fun ends in a hurry when your email and Messenger inboxes start overflowing with SPAM.
Just as bad, a good number of those game/quiz apps will grant themselves access to your actual Facebook/Messenger account and use it to spam and scam your connections and the people on your Friends list.
Now I don’t mean to be a Debbie Downer who doesn’t want you to enjoy yourself online.
All I’m saying is it pays to be careful about the games and quizzes you choose to engage with on Facebook. Before you decide to use one I recommend doing a quick Google search to make sure the app is legit.
A simple search for something like [name of app] facebook scam should do the trick. If anything fishy pops up it might be a good idea to take a pass on it.
