Q&A: Can I use an external monitor with my laptop’s lid closed?
Question from Alan: I bought a Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 7420 Laptop for my home-based business.
The 14 inch screen is fine for when I’m travelling (which I do often) but I’d prefer to use my 27 inch external monitor when I’m at home. I have no problem getting the external monitor to work with the laptop but when I close the lid the machine goes into Sleep mode.
Is there any way to use my laptop with the external monitor and have the lid closed on the laptop at the same time?
I know lots of people like using dual screens but I happen to find the second screen distracting.
Rick’s answer: You can easily set up your laptop to use the external display with the lid closed, Alan. Here’s how:
1 – Click the Start button and then immediately start typing the word control.
2 – Select Control Panel from the list of search results.
3 – Click Hardware and Sound.
4 – Click Power Options.
5 – In the left-hand pane, click Choose what closing the lid does.
6 – Change the “When I close the lid” setting to Do nothing.
7 – Click the Save changes button.
That’s all there is to it. Now you’ll be able to close the lid on your laptop without the machine going into Sleep mode.
