Q&A: How do I keep your emails from going in Gmail’s Promotions folder?
Question from Kerrie: I’m having an issue with Gmail that’s driving me up the wall.
Some of your newsletter emails have a habit of landing in the “Promotions” folder instead of my Inbox. They usually go to the Inbox, but once or twice a week one of them will go to the Promotions folder instead.
I’ve clicked the Not “Promotions” link numerous times but a small percentage of your emails still end up going to Promotions.
Your newsletters are obviously not “junk emails” so we should be able to choose an option to always have them go into the Inbox. But if there is such an option in the settings I can’t find it.
Is there any way to fix this? I know it sounds like a small thing but it gets old having to go into Promotions every few days to retrieve emails that are never junky in nature (especially if we signed up to receive them).
Rick’s answer: Kerrie, this has been an issue ever since Google added the Promotions folder to Gmail. For the most part their algorithm does a fairly decent job, but as you’ve discovered they really drop the ball at times.
Luckily, there’s a very simple fix for the “Promotions” issue. All you have to do is add my newsletter’s email address to your Google Contacts list. This is actually very easy to do if you use Gmail on a laptop or desktop computer. Here’s how:
1 – Hover your mouse over the Sender field (in my emails it should say Rick’s Tech Tips Newsletter).
2 – Click the little Add to contacts icon (it looks like a little person avatar with a plus sign beside it).
If you use the Gmail mobile app on Android you can still add my email to your Contacts list but it isn’t quite as simple as doing it on a computer. You’ll find instructions right here.
That’s all there is to it. This should take care of the problem since emails from people on your Contacts list should always go into your Inbox.
