Today’s Quick Tip….
How to limit Windows app installs to just apps from the Microsoft Store
Running Windows in S mode enhances the security of the system by limiting the universe of apps that can be installed to just the apps that are available from the Microsoft Store.
But that extra security comes at a great cost if you really need to use a program or app that is only available from a third-party source.
This is one of the primary reasons why most people prefer having a Windows Home or Pro version on their machines instead of one of the Windows S versions.
But there are a few situations in which it makes sense to limit app installs just to apps from the Microsoft Store.
For example, if you’re getting a PC for a child or someone who needs to use their machine for accessing the Internet and little else, not allowing app installs from third-party locations will help ensure that their PC remains free of malware and other types of security risks.
This limitation will allow the user to take advantage of one of the most important security enhancements provided by Windows S mode while still enjoying all the other advantages of a full-blown Windows Home or Pro installation.
Just follow the steps below if you’d like to limit a PC’s app installs to just apps that are available from the Microsoft Store:
1 – Right-click the Start button, then click Settings.
2 – Click Apps.
3 – Click Apps & features.
4 – Change the “Choose where to get apps” setting to The Microsoft Store only.
That’s all there is to it. From now on that PC will only allow the user to install apps that are available from the Microsoft Store.
Now, that that’s out of the way, I must mention one caveat…
The setting you changed to limit app installs to just apps from the Microsoft Store can be changed right back to its original setting by any user. Therefore, this protection isn’t anywhere near fool-proof.
However, this probably won’t be an issue if the user is aq Windows novice or someone who simply plans to use the computer as-is without wanting to make any settings changes.
