Today’s featured tech tip….
Warning: Don’t let cloud storage be your only backup medium
Cloud-based backup services such as Carbonite or iDrive make it easy to set up a (more-or-less) hands-off backup routine, but it’s very important to back up at least your most important files locally as well.
Always having a recent local backup on hand will allow you to restore your lost files even if something catastrophic were to happen to your remote backups.
What could happen you ask? Well, here are just a few of the possibilities:
1 – A major storm destroys your computer AND knocks out your Internet service at the same time. You replace your computer the same day, but it takes your ISP several days to restore your Internet connection. If you have a local backup on hand you’ll be able to restore your files and be back up and running long before your Internet connection comes back online.
2 – A ransomware attack results in your backup files on the remote server being lost to malicious encryption. While you’ll likely get them back after the remote backup service restores everything from their backups, that could easily take days or weeks. Again, having a local backup on hand will allow you to recover your files right away.
3 – You wake up one morning to find that your remote backup service has filed for bankruptcy and gone offline for good.
Bottom line: Redundancy is the key to any effective backup plan. Having your important files stored both locally and on a remote server will ensure that you’ll be able to restore lost files (and as quickly as possible).

Rick’s Daily Pick…
SanDisk Cruzer Glide 256GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive w/ Encryption
Do you enjoy the ease and convenience of transporting files on a USB flash drive but worry about the security of your files if you happen to lose it?
Well, with this little gem you can encrypt your sensitive files to keep them private in case someone else were to happen to gain control of the drive. I use one of these to keep my passwords securely stored in a fireproof lock box.
