Today’s quick tech tip….
How to keep using a laptop with a bad keyboard
I hear from folks all the time who are looking to replace a laptop just because the keyboard has stopped working.
And truth be told, some of those laptops are getting a little long-in-the-tooth so it actually makes sense to go ahead and replace them.
But many of the machines that develop keyboard issues are actually fairly modern and still have lots of useful life left in them.
If you have a laptop that you’re happy with and it develops a keyboard problem, you don’t necessarily have to ditch it and buy a new one. You actually have a couple of great options:
1 – Replace the defective keyboard
Believe it or not, the keyboards on many popular laptop models aren’t all that difficult to replace.
What’s more, replacement keyboards aren’t very expensive. In fact, you can find them on Amazon for as little as 15 bucks.
The first thing to do is head over to YouTube and search for videos that show how to replace the keyboard in your specific brand and model of laptop.
If it looks like it’s a fairly simple task, go to Amazon and search for a replacement keyboard (again, for your laptop’s brand and model).
Once the keyboard arrives simply follow the steps detailed in the video to remove the old keyboard and install the new one in its place.
2 – Plug in an external USB keyboard
If you tend to use your laptop in the same location all the time you can simply get yourself an external USB keyboard (preferably wireless) and you’ll be back in business in no time flat.
You won’t even need to worry about disabling the internal keyboard. The external keyboard will work just fine even with the internal keyboard still enabled.
