Today’s featured tech tip….
Q&A: Why am I getting duplicate friend requests on Facebook?
Question from Janie: I’ve been getting a lot of friend requests lately from people that I’m already friends with on Facebook. It’s gotten so bad that some days I’ll receive over a dozen of them.
Why am I getting these? I always check my friends list and these people are already on there.
Rick’s answer: The short answer to your question is fraud, Janie.
Truth be told, the “duplicate” friend requests you’re receiving aren’t really duplicates at all. Facebook won’t allow an account to send a friend request to an account that it’s already friends with.
Every “duplicate” friend request you receive was actually sent from an entirely different “clone” Facebook account that a scammer created by copying the personal info and photos from someone’s real account and populating an entirely new account with the stolen info and pics.
If you’re wondering why the scammers are creating so many fake “clone” accounts, the answer once again is fraud.
Once a fake account has been created the scammer sends friend requests from the fake account to every person that’s listed on the real account’s Friends list. Once several of the duped friends have accepted the fraudulent friend requests the scammer than uses that fake “clone” account to scam those friends in some way.
It would be very easy to put a stop to this type of scam if everyone would simply stop accepting the fraudulent “duplicate” friend requests, but unfortunately there will always be people who accept them even though I and many others have been warning folks about this scam for years.
But that being said, you can still do your part by simply ignoring any friend requests that appear to have been sent by folks who are already on your Friends list. If enough people stop responding to the “duplicate” friend requests this particular scam will eventually die out.
And now, here’s a quick bonus tip…
If you’ll take a few moments to hide your own Friends list that will remove the incentive for scammers to clone your account.
Why? Because if the scammers don’t know who your friends are they can’t send them friend requests. And if they can’t send them friend requests they can’t scam. Hide your Friends list and the fraudulent friend requests should stop immediately, at least for you.
