Today’s quick tech tip….
Q&A: Can I retrieve a forgotten password from my iPhone?
Question from Melissa: I read your article explaining how to retrieve a forgotten password from a web browser.
Can I do that with my iPhone?
Lightning destroyed my computer and I had to replace it and now I can’t log in to a couple of my accounts because I can’t remember the passwords.
I know the passwords are on my phone because I can log in with it without having to enter the passwords.
Rick’s answer: You sure can Melissa, and it’s very easy to do. Here’s how:
1 – Tap the Settings icon on your iPhone (it looks like a “gear“).
2 – Scroll down and tap Passwords.
If “AutoFill Passwords” is enabled (and it should be since you can log into accounts without entering a password) you should now see a list of accounts that have their login info stored on your iPhone.
3 – Tap on the first account you need to retrieve the password for.
4 – You should now see that account’s User Name followed by a row of dots representing the password. Tap on those dots.
5 – The password for that account should now be displayed on the screen. Write down the password for safekeeping.
6 – Repeat the steps above for any other passwords that you need to retrieve.
That’s all there is to it, Melissa. You now know how to retrieve stored passwords from your iPhone (and your iPad as well, if you have one).
Now, I feel the need to tell you this…
This situation is a perfect example of just one of the reasons why I recommend against allowing your device(s) to store your passwords. This post has more info on that, but here are a couple of things to consider…
1 – If you were to lose both devices at once (they get stolen from a hotel room, for example) you wouldn’t be able to retrieve your passwords for use on your new replacement devices.
2 – You now know how easy it is to retrieve passwords from an iPhone. It would be just as easy for any crook who somehow managed to get his hands on your device (assuming the device isn’t protected with a login PIN, of course).
