Today’s quick tech tip….
Q&A: How can I prevent senders from knowing I read their text messages?
Question form Cara: I know that when I read a text message my phone lets the sender know I’ve read it.
I don’t like that because it makes me feel like I have to answer them right away.
How do I stop my phone from sending those “I read your message” notifications?
Rick’s answer: Cara, the notifications you’re talking about are called “Read Receipts” and they can easily be turned off.
You didn’t mention whether your phone is an iPhone or an Android so I’ll provide instructions for both.
If you have an iPhone:
1 – Tap your iPhone’s Settings icon (it looks like a “gear“).
2 – Scroll down and tap Messages.
3 – Scroll down and toggle the “Send Read Receipts” setting to Off (the slider should turn from green to gray).
If you have an Android phone:
1 – Open the Messages app (the app you use to send SMS text messages, not Facebook’s Messenger app).
2 – Tap the three dots at the far-right side of the Search bar, then select Settings from the drop-down menu.
3 – Tap Chat features.
4 – Toggle the “Send read receipts” setting to Off (the slider should turn from blue to gray).
That’s all there is to it. From now on when you read incoming text messages the senders won’t be notified that you have read them.
