Today’s quick tech tip….
Format a flash drive to work with both Windows and macOS
If you ever find yourself needing to share files between a Windows PC and a Mac, you can easily do that using a regular flash drive (assuming the drive has connectors that fit in both machines).
All you need to do is format the flash drive using the exFat file system.
You can format the flash drive with either a PC or Mac, but the process is simpler on a PC. Here’s how:
Important: Before you format any drive it’s a good idea to check to make sure there aren’t any files on it that you don’t want to lose. Any files that are on the drive will be gone after the format process is complete.
1 – Connect the flash drive to the PC.
2 – Press the Windows+E key combination to open a “File Explorer” window.
3 – In the left-hand pane, click This PC.
4 – In the right-hand pane, right-click on the flash drive you want to format, then select Format from the drop-down menu.
5 – Click inside the drop-down box in the “File system” field and select exFat.
6 – Click OK in the warning box to confirm that you really want to format the drive.
7 – Click OK in the “Format complete” dialog, then click the X to close the “Format dialog”.
That’s all there is to it. You can now copy files from a Windows PC onto that flash drive and access them on a Mac (and vice versa).
