Today’s featured tech tip….
Why Time Machine should be your Mac’s primary backup tool
If you have a Mac you might be tempted to depend on iCloud for your backup method/medium if the machine is set to sync everything with your iCloud storage.
However, I strongly recommend that you create Time Machine backups as well.
For sure, iCloud makes an awesome backup medium for your photos and other user-created files, but it isn’t a true backup service that you can depend on to get your Mac back up and running after a drive failure.
Like the System Image Backup tool in Windows, Time Machine backs up everything on your Mac, not just your photos and files.
If you have a recent Time Machine backup on hand you’ll be able to quickly restore your Mac back to the exact state it was in when the last backup was created. And that’s a real time (and work) saver.
If you depend only on iCloud for your backups you’ll first have to manually re-install macOS plus your apps and printers and then reconfigure all of the system settings you had in place before the drive went south.
When all of those tasks are complete you’ll finally be ready to copy the files stored in your iCloud storage back onto your Mac.
As you can see, restoring your Mac from a local Time Machine backup is so much faster and easier than the process detailed above.
Now I didn’t say all of the above in order to get you to ditch iCloud. Far from it.
iCloud is an amazing tool for automatically creating redundant backups of your irreplaceable photos and files, as well as making them easily accessible to your other devices.
I just recommend that you don’t fall into the trap of depending on iCloud to serve as your primary backup tool.
