How to use the F8 key to boot Windows 11 into Safe Mode
Remember how you could boot Windows 7 into Safe Mode by repeatedly pressing the F8 key after pressing the PC’s Power button?
As you probably know, Microsoft disabled the F8 key for booting into Safe Mode starting with Windows 8.
But did you know there’s an easy way to get that functionality back?
Yep, after making just one little tweak you’ll be able to boot Windows 11 into Safe Mode the same way you did in Windows 7: by pressing the F8 key at startup.
Here’s how to enable the F8 key for booting Windows 11 into Safe Mode:
1 – Click the Start button to open the Start Menu.
2 – Type the letters cmd.
3 – After it appears in the search results, right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator from the pop-up menu.
4 – Answer Yes in response to the “User Account Control” dialog.
5 – Copy and paste the following at the command prompt (after the > character):
bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy
6 – Press the Enter key.
You should now see a message stating “The operation completed successfully”. If not, double-check the entry above and re-paste it after the command prompt.
That’s all there is to it. The next time you need to boot Windows 11 into Safe Mode simply press the PC’s Power button and then start repeatedly pressing the F8 key as soon as the machine powers up.
In just a few seconds you should see the “Advanced Boot Options” menu from which you’ll be able to select “Safe Mode” or one of the other available options.
