Today’s featured tech tip….
Why some WiFi connections say ‘Connected-No Internet’
If you have a smartphone, a tablet or a laptop, chances are you’ve connected to Wi-Fi networks in the past that said something like “Connected-No Internet”.
I know it seems odd that something like that could happen, but it actually happens all the time.
As you already know if you read this post, although they are closely related on a practical level, Wi-Fi and the Internet are actually two completely different things.
Wi-Fi is a wireless technology that allows you to connect a device smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.) to a router or gateway. It basically takes the place of a physical Ethernet cable.
In short, it’s a method of connecting two or more networking devices together, and that’s pretty much the extent of it.
The Internet, on the other hand, is a world-wide network of interconnected devices that are literally located in every country on Earth.
If you have a device that’s connected to the Internet through a modem and router (or gateway), you can interact with any of those billions of devices worldwide as long as you 1) know how to tell your device to “find” the other device and 2) have the login credentials required to access it (if required).
Bottom line: When your device says you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network that just means you’re connected to that network’s router or gateway.
If for some reason the other side of the router or gateway isn’t connected to the Internet, your device won’t be able to access anything past the router itself – hence the “Connected-No Internet” message.
