Today’s quick tech tip….
Add a numbers row to your Android phone’s keyboard
Do you do a lot of typing on your Android phone and use the standard Gboard onscreen keyboard that comes pre-installed on most Android devices?
If so, you’ve probably noticed that you have to press the ?123 icon in order to type in a number.
But guess what? Even though Gboard doesn’t display numbers along with the letters by default, there’s a setting you can change that will place a numbers row directly above the letters on the letters panel.
Give this a try:
1 – Open any app that you can type in and tap inside any input box to launch the Gboard onscreen keyboard.
2 – Tap the “gear” shaped Settings icon at the top of the keyboard.
3 – Tap Preferences.
4 – Toggle the “Number row” setting to On.
5 – Tap the left arrow a couple of times to back out of the Settings screens.
That’s all there is to it. You should now have a row of numbers displayed directly above the letters. From now on you’ll be able to type numbers on your phone without having to switch to a different key panel.
By the way, there are other onscreen keyboards available for Android devices besides just the standard Gboard, and most of them also allow you to display a numbers row along with the letters.
There are too many third-party Android keyboards for me to supply instructions for all of them here, but if you use an alternate keyboard just look through its Setting screens for a “Numbers row” (0r equivalent) setting.
If you can’t find one, reply to one of my emails with the name of the keyboard you’re using and I’ll try my best to help you with the settings change.
