Do you have a favorite app that you’ve been using on your iPhone or other iOS device for years?
If so, there’s a chance that it might stop working after you update your device to iOS 11 after it’s released this fall.
Apple is planning to end support for legacy 32 bit apps beginning with the release of iOS 11. That means any 32 bit apps that you’re currently using will stop working on your devices after you update them to iOS 11.
This is a major change that’s expected to affect almost 200,000 apps. Since that represents approximately 8% of all the apps currently offered through iTunes, there’s a decent chance that one or more of the apps you’re using right now will be affected.
If your device is running the latest version of iOS you can check to see which (if any) of your apps will be orphaned by iOS 11 by navigating to Settings>General>About>Applications.
Bottom line: If you’re still running a legacy 32 bit app on your iPhone or iPad you’ll soon need to either update the app to the 64 bit version (if one is available) or switch to a different 64 bit app that performs the same task.
And now, just one more thing…
I strongly recommend that you back up your device to iCloud when it comes time to update it to the next version of iOS.
