Do you currently use third-party ink cartridges in an HP Officejet printer?
If so, your non-HP cartridges might no longer work after you install your printer’s latest firmware update.
A few days ago HP released a new firmware update for several Officejet models that force the printer to display an error message when it detects that you have installed a non-HP ink cartridge.
Even worse, the printer won’t print another page until the third-party cartridge has been replaced by an “official” HP cartridge.
As you probably know, printer manufacturers typically sell their printers for relatively low prices, then make huge profits by selling the ink cartridges for those printers at obscenely high prices.
In order to save money on ink, many users purchase third-party ink cartridges. Now HP has apparently decided to put a stop to that practice by disabling third-party cartridges altogether.
The affected models currently appear to include the following (with more models surely on the way):
- HP Officejet Pro 8610
- HP Officejet Pro 8615
- HP Officejet Pro 8620
- HP Officejet Pro 8625
- HP Officejet Pro 8630
Bottom line: If you own an HP Officejet printer (whether it’s listed above or not) and it still works with third-party cartridges, DO NOT install the latest firmware upgrade for your printer if you wish to keep using third-party ink.
