In January 2018 HP issued a recall notice for 150,000 defective laptop batteries that were at risk of over-heating and catching fire.
Now, just as that particular recall was winding down the company has been forced to add 78,500 additional batteries to the recall list.

HP says that not all of the above-mentioned laptops have defective batteries.
They have released a free software tool you can download and run on your laptop to quickly find out if your particular laptop’s battery has been recalled.
This tool is called the HP Battery Validation Utility and you can download it from this page.
If your laptop is listed on either of the above lists I recommend that you download the tool and run it on your laptop to see if its battery has been recalled.
If your laptop’s battery has indeed been recalled you’ll need to visit this page to arrange for HP to send you a replacement battery.
Bottom line: It’s extremely dangerous to operate any laptop with a defective battery installed, and the batteries covered under this recall are especially dangerous because they can potentially over-heat and catch fire.
If the battery in your HP laptop is covered by the recall I strongly recommend that you contact HP right away and request a free replacement battery.
