Flickr has long been one of the most popular free photo storage services on the Internet.
However, that’ll almost certainly change once these changes the company just announced take place on January 8, 2019.
Beginning on that date all free Flickr accounts will be limited to a maximum of 1,000 photos and/or videos.
1,000 photos might sound like a lot, but it really isn’t. In fact, some professional and serious amateur photographers frequently take that many photos in a single day.
What’s more, if you’ve been uploading photos to Flickr for a good while you could easily have several thousand images stored in your own account at this very moment.
How will this change affect you?
If you have more than 1,000 images and/or videos currently stored in a free Flickr account you’ll have to do one of the following before January 8 rolls around:
1 – Download enough of your Flickr-stored photos and/or videos to local storage to bring the total number of files stored there to 1,000 or less.
Important: Start with the very first photo/video you uploaded and work your way backwards!
2 – Move those photos/videos to a different cloud storage service (again, start with the very first file you uploaded).
3 – Upgrade your free Flickr account to a paid Pro account (Pro accounts cost $49.99 per year).
Note: Pro accounts don’t have limits on the number of files you can store or the amount of storage space you can use.
What will happen if you don’t take one of the above measures by January 8?
On January 8, 2019 Flickr will automatically delete enough photos and videos from your free account (starting with your very first upload and working backwards) to bring your account into compliance with the new 1,000 photo/video limit.
Bottom line: If you want to keep storing your photos and/or videos at Flickr after these changes take place in January you must take one of the actions listed above unless you know you’ll never have more than 1,000 files stored in your free account.
