Back in September HP stealthily released a new firmware update that blocks the use of third-party ink cartridges in some HP Officejet printers.
Customer backlash was quick and fierce, prompting HP to apologize and pledge to remove the ban just a few days later.
At the time, they said a new firmware update to reverse the ban would be released in the near future. As promised, the company has now released the new firmware update.
If you own an HP Officejet printer that was affected by the third-party ink cartridge ban, you should now be able to download and install the “ban reversal” update. Here’s how:
1 – Visit the “Drivers” section of the HP support site at this URL:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers
2 – Enter your printer’s model number (i.e. HP Officejet Pro 8610).
3 – Click the Find my product button.
4 – Select your printer model from the list of search results.
5 – Click the plus sign (+) at the end of the “Firmware” line.
6 – Click the Download button.
7 – Click on the downloaded executable file to begin the firmware installation process, then follow the prompts as required.
That’s all there is to it. Your third-party ink cartridges should work after the new firmware update has been installed.
