Today’s Quick Tip….
Can you upgrade your Mac with a new SSD?
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you probably know replacing a computer’s hard drive with a much-faster SSD is the best upgrade you can make for the money.
And if your machine already has an SSD, replacing it with a larger one is also a great option to consider if you’re running low on storage space.
Although there are exceptions, most Windows laptop and desktop PCs can accept an SSD upgrade, but with Macs it’s a little more complicated.
Almost all Macs that are several years old be upgraded with a new (or larger) SSD, but many of the newest models cannot.
Here’s a list of relatively recent Mac’s that can definitely be upgraded by installing a new SSD:
- MacBook Core 2 Duo
- MacBook Unibody
- MacBook Pro 13″ (2009-2012)
- MacBook Pro 13″ with Retina Display (Late 2012-Early 2015)
- MacBook Pro 15″ (2008-2012)
- MacBook Pro 15″ with Retina Display (Mid 2012-Mid 2015)
- MacBook Pro 17″ (All Models)
- MacBook Air 11″ (All Models)
- MacBook Air 13″ (All Models)
- Mac Mini (All Models)
- iMac (All Models)
- iMac Pro (All Models)
- Mac Pro (All Models)
If you have a Mac that’s older than the models listed above, you’ll (probably) be able to install an SSD in it as well.
However, if you have one of the following machines you’re out of luck if you’re interested in performing an SSD upgrade:
- Retina MacBook (All Models)
- MacBook Pro 13″ (2016-2017)
- MacBook Pro 13″ with Touch Bar (All Models)
- MacBook Pro 15″ with Touch Bar (All Models)
Of course a defective drive in virtually any Mac can be replaced, but the last four models listed above will have to be taken to either an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider so they can do it for you. You won’t be able to it yourself.
What’s more, the replacement of the bad drive itself could well require the replacement of the motherboard as well, depending on the model of the Mac in question.
If you’re unsure which exact model of Mac or MacBook you have, here’s how to quickly find out:
1 – Fire up your Mac and click the Apple icon on the top menu bar.
2 – Click About This Mac.
You should now see the exact model of your Mac/MacBook printed on the screen.
