Today’s Quick Tip….
Is your waterproof phone truly waterproof?
These days most modern smartphones as designed to be waterproof to one degree or another, but just how waterproof are they in reality?
The water resistance ratings of phones vary from model to model, with some devices being more resistant to the intrusion of water than others.
Truth be told, there’s no guarantee that any consumer-grade smartphone is going to be truly waterproof in all situations.
Can you use your ‘waterproof’ phone to make a brief voice call while standing in the rain and then quickly wipe it off without having it incur any damage from internal water intrusion?
With very few exceptions, the answer is probably yes.
Will your phone be ok if someone pushes you into a pool but you jump right out and immediately dry the phone off?
Again, the answer is probably yes.
However, it would probably be a bad idea to go swimming in a chlorinated pool or a salty ocean with your phone in your pocket.
Even if the phone is sealed well enough to prevent the intrusion of water, prolonged exposure to salt water and/or chlorine could easily damage your phone’s external parts and the special coating on the screen.
What’s more, over time a phone’s waterproof seal can deteriorate and crack, resulting in tiny ‘channels’ that water can seep through and damage the phone’s internal components.
Bottom line: The water resistance rating of any phone should only be considered 100% reliable for quick exposures that are immediately wiped away.
And if the phone is a year or more old, even that can be a little iffy.
