How to set an Internet data limit for your Windows PC
If your Internet service plan has a monthly data cap you might worry about going over that limit and getting stuck with an extra fee, especially if you do a lot of video streaming.
If this is a concern of yours you can can easily set a monthly data limit for your Windows PC. After you set a data limit Windows will warn you when you get close to exceeding it.
If you’d like to set a data limit for your Internet connection just follow the steps below for your Windows version.
Windows 11:
1 – Right-click the Start button, then click Settings.
2 – In the left-hand pane, click Network & internet.
3 – In the right-hand pane, click Advanced network settings.
4 – Scroll down to the “More settings” section and click Data usage.
5 – At the top right you should see that the Internet connection that’s currently in use is selected. If you wish to set a data limit for this connection simply leave this field as it is.
If you’d like to set a data limit for a different Internet connection, simply click on the currently used connection and select the connection you want to set a limit for.
6 – Click Enter limit.
7 – Select Monthly, then choose the both the unit you’d like to use (most likely GB) and the actual data limit.
8 – Set the “Monthly reset date” to the day of the month when your data usage is reset back to zero by your ISP.
9 – Click Save.
Windows 10:
1 – Right-click the Start button, then click Settings.
2 – Click Network & internet.
3 – In the left-hand pane, click Status.
4 – In the right-hand pane, click Data usage.
That’s all there is to it. From now on Windows will warn you when you get close to exceeding your Internet plan’s monthly data limit. You can then decide whether to disconnect from the Internet for the rest of the month or continue consuming data and pay the overage fee.
