Hey, I have a news flash for you…
If you are a Facebook user, you have been labeled by Facebook as either “Liberal”, “Moderate” or “Conservative” in regards to your political leaning.
And guess what? You have been assigned a “political leaning” even if you NEVER make any posts that are political in nature.
How Facebook determines your political leaning is quite interesting…
Do you frequently “Like” posts or pages that have a religious theme or express conservative ideas? Do you tend to visit conservative websites even when you aren’t actually using Facebook? If so, you will likely be labeled by Facebook’s algorithm as a conservative.
Likewise, if you tend to “Like” posts or pages that are more liberal in nature or visit liberal websites, you will likely be labeled as a liberal.
If, on the other hand, your “Likes” and Internet habits cover the entire political spectrum, you are probably labeled as a moderate by Facebook.
If you’re curious about how Facebook’s algorithm has labeled you, it’s easy to find out. Just follow the steps below for the type of device you’re using…
If you’re using a laptop or desktop computer:
1 – Log into your Facebook account.
2 – Visit Facebook’s “Ad Preferences” page.
3 – Scroll down and click Your Information.
4 – Click Your categories. You should now see a “US Politics” box that contains the political leaning that Facebook has determined fits you best.
Note: If you don’t live in the United States you should see the “Politics” box for your country instead of “US Politics”.
If you’re using the Facebook app on a mobile device:
1 – Log into your Facebook account.
2 – Tap the Menu icon (depending on your version of the app it should look like either three horizontal lines or three dots).
3 – Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy.
4 – Tap Account Settings.
5 – Scroll down and tap Ads.
6 – Scroll down and tap Your information.
7 – Scroll down and tap Review and Manage Your Categories. You should now see a line labeled “US Politics” that contains the political leaning that Facebook has determined fits you best.
Note: If you don’t live in the United States you should see the “Politics” box for your country instead of “US Politics”.
That’s all there is to it. Now you know which political label Facebook has determined fits you best.
By the way, I don’t know why Facebook chooses to assign every user a political label, but my guess is it helps them choose ads and posts for your newsfeed that match your political leaning as closely as possible. I’ll leave it to you to decide for yourself whether that makes sense or not.
