Questions from Ellen H.: Hi Rick. I need your help with something on Facebook.
Can tell me how to disable the “Memories” posts that pop up in my newsfeed every day? I don’t like them.
They would be ok if they didn’t have a habit of reminding me of bad events from the past. The one from yesterday was about my divorce, and it really disturbed me.
I hope you can help me disable them. Thanks Rick.
Rick’s answer: First of all Ellen, I’m sorry that Facebook brought back such a bad memory for you by resurrecting that particular post. It seems to me that they could install filters that screen out posts with words depicting sad events, but so far they haven’t.
To answer your question, It’s actually pretty easy to prevent “Memories” (aka “On This Day” posts) from popping up on Facebook. Just follow the steps below for the device you’re using to access Facebook.
Follow these steps if you access Facebook via a web browser on a laptop or desktop computer:
1 – Log into your Facebook account.
2 – Click the Menu icon at the right side of the blue bar at the top of the Facebook window (it will either look like a down arrow or a gear/cog).
3 – Click Settings.
4 – Click the Notifications link over in the left-hand column.
5 – Click On Facebook.Follow these steps if you access Facebook via a web browser on a laptop or desktop computer:
6 – Find the “On This Day” setting and click the arrow in the box on the far right-hand side of that line.
7 – Click None.
Follow these steps if you access Facebook via the Facebook app on a mobile device:
1 – Log into your Facebook account.
2 – Tap the Menu icon located near the top-right corner of the screen (it looks like three horizontal lines stacked atop once another).
3 – Scroll down and tap Memories.
4 – Tap the Settings icon located in the top-right corner of the screen (it looks like a gear/cog).
5 – Tap Notifications.
6 – Tap None.
That’s all there is to it. You should no longer see old “Memories” posts pop up in your newsfeed.
I hope this helps Ellen. Good luck!
