Today’s quick tech tip….
How (and when) to flush your Mac’s DNS Cache
Like other devices that access the Internet, your Mac has a DNS Cache that stores the hostnames and IP addresses of the websites you’ve visited recently.
This database of recently accessed site info enables your browser to visit those same sites again without having to waste the time and Internet bandwidth that would be consumed if it had to look those items up again.
That’s a great thing, but occasionally the DNS cache can get corrupted or some of its stored data can become outdated, causing the browser to become sluggish and even refuse to load some websites that are actually up and running.
If you start having problems like these with your browser you can try flushing the DNS Cache to see if that clears the problem(s) up. Chances are it will.
Here’s how to flush your Mac’s DNS Cache:
1 – Press the Command+Space Bar key combination to open a Spotlight search bar.
2 – Type the word terminal, then click on Terminal after it pops up in the search results.
3 – Copy and paste the following into the Terminal window:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
4 – Press the Enter (or Return) key.
5 –Enter your password and press the Enter (or Return) key to complete the “Flush DNS” procedure.
That’s all there is to it. Your Mac’s DNS Cache should now be empty and (hopefully) the browser issues you were dealing with are gone as well.
