How to encrypt your messages in the Messenger app
Did you know the messages you send and receive using Facebook’s popular Messenger app aren’t encrypted by default?
That means a hacker (or anyone else) could potentially intercept your messages and read your conversations just as easily as the person you’re conversing with.
This has long been a serious security issue for Messenger users, but Facebook has finally gotten around to adding End-to-End Encryption to the app.
In a nutshell, End-to-End Encryption makes it impossible for a third-party to read your messages even if they are intercepted somewhere along the way.
Only your device and the device belonging to the person you’re conversing with can decrypt the messages so they can be read.
As you can see, this is a major security enhancement. The problem is, for whatever reason Facebook added End-to-End Encryption to Messenger but then decided to leave it disabled by default.
If you want to take advantage of it in order to keep your conversations secret you’ll need to enable it.
Luckily, this is very easy to do, but it isn’t something that you can just set once and forget. You’ll need to enable it for every conversation you start.
Follow the steps below to enable End-to-End Encryption for a conversation:
1 – Open the Messenger app.
2 – Tap the profile icon of the contact you wish to send a message to in order to open an existing conversation with that person.
3 – Tap their profile icon at the top of the screen, the scroll down and tap Go to secret conversation.
Now, if you look at the bottom of the screen you should see a message stating that your messages are now secured with End-to-End Encryption.
That means for the remainder of this session every message you send to this person and every reply you receive back from them will be encrypted and safe from prying eyes.
Just remember that you’ll need to enable End-to-End Encryption every time you wish to use it to keep a conversation secret.
