Today’s Quick Tip….
Major Windows feature updates have moved to an annual schedule
If you’ve been using Windows 10 for a while you know that Microsoft has always released a major feature update for it twice per year – once in the spring and the other in the fall.
Now that Windows 11 is here they’ve decided to ditch the semi-annual update schedule and start releasing major feature updates once per year.
And they’re not limiting the schedule change to Windows 11, either. They’re switching to an annual update schedule for Windows 10 as well.
Personally, I think this was a wise decision on their part…
For one thing, it was obvious to me that developing a new major update every six months was just too much for them to handle in regards to testing and bug squashing. It seemed like every major update resulted in lots of PCs being bricked and other less serious issues accompanying the release.
My guess is they grew weary of all the complaints they received from angry and frustrated users after their machines broke after the updates were installed.
Switching to an annual schedule will give Microsoft’s developers an entire year to plan for, code and debug new features before the final release version is ready to be distributed to the masses.
Let’s just hope they decide on a decent end point for development to leave plenty of time. for debugging. If they keep adding new features and making major changes right up until the last minute they’ll find themselves right back in the same situation they’re trying to avoid.
Just my two cents worth…
