Scam alert: Be careful when downloading free software with an ad blocker enabled

Posted on June 12, 2020

Whether this actually fits into the “scam” category is probably debatable, but in my opinion it fits into it fairly well.

There are countless free software programs and apps on the Internet, and many of them are simply outstanding. In fact, I recommend free programs to my readers all the time.

But that being said, there’s one huge problem with some free download sites: It’s easy to unknowingly download unwanted “add-on” software if you aren’t diligent about checking the download page for offers for “optional” programs and apps.  [Read more…]

Protect your Mac from viruses and other security threats with Avast Free Mac Security

Posted on May 18, 2020

One of Apple’s most successful marketing claims has always been that simply owning a Mac instead of a PC can help keep your computer safe from malware.

For many years that claim was valid, but unfortunately that’s no longer the case.

Recent studies indicate that the number of successful malware attacks on Macs has skyrocketed in recent years, and the problem is getting worse by the day.

The flaw has been codenamed “Cable Haunt” and it could very well be present in YOUR cable modem.

If so, hackers can potentially exploit the flaw in your modem’s firmware to inject malicious code into your data transmissions, steal any personal or financial information that is sent or received by the modem or do one of several other malicious things – in your name!

Warning: It’ll no longer be safe to use Windows 7 after January 14!

Posted on January 2, 2020

As you probably know by now, Microsoft will no longer be supplying security updates for Windows 7 after January 14, 2020.

In other words, they’re going to basically abandon Windows 7 and leave users to fend for themselves when it comes to the security of their computers.

Several people have asked me if it’ll be safe to keep using Windows 7 after the updates stop coming down the pike.
