Q&A: Can carrying a sleeping laptop damage the hard drive?

Posted on April 15, 2023

Question from Larry:  I just bought my first laptop and I have a question about it.

When I close the lid it goes into Sleep mode. Is it safe to carry it around while in Sleep mode or should I shut it down completely?

I’ve always been told never to move a computer that’s powered up or it’ll damage the hard drive, and a sleeping laptop still has power, right?

As you can see I’m confused LOL. Looking forward to your answer.

Simple tips and tricks for passing most any written test

Posted on March 26, 2023

Back in my school days I usually did quite well at taking tests. I guess I was blessed with that gift.

Some people are just better at taking tests than others, and it really has little, if anything, to do with intelligence or preparation.

I remember several major tests and exams on which I ended up receiving higher scores than friends who I considered to be a lot “smarter” and better prepared than I was.

  • “Dell to lay off 6,650 workers, or 5% of its workforce“
  • “Microsoft to lay off 10,000 workers as it looks to trim costs“

And those companies are just the tip of the iceberg, with mass layoffs affecting numerous tech professionals across the entire tech tech sector.

All these layoffs have prompted me to ponder this question: If these companies can lay off thousands of their employees, did they really need that many in the first place?  [Read more…]

New scams are hatched up every day, and they seem to get more sophisticated all the time.

A perfect case-in-point is the deceptive “Apple Tech Support” scam that’s making the rounds right now.

The scammers do their dirty deeds by spawning fake pop-up warnings on your Apple device telling you that malicious code has been found on your device and your personal and financial information are at risk.  [Read more…]

Are antivirus software makers intentionally spreading malware?

Posted on March 18, 2023

I don’t usually subscribe to conspiracy theories, and the last thing I would ever want to do is create one.

That being said, I have often wondered to myself whether the antivirus software companies could be creating malware and spreading it over the Internet in order to perpetuate the demand for their products.
