Question from Andrew:  I have an HP laptop that I bought new just 3 months ago, and it already has a problem.

When I turn the laptop on I can smell a faint burning smell and see faint whiffs of smoke coming out of the keyboard.

The thing is it boots up normally and works fine and no part of the laptop seems to get hotter than it should (to the touch at least).

My question is do you think this might be something I can fix myself or do you recommend that I just go ahead and send it back?  [Read more…]

Question from Stanley: A while back I spent some time shopping around for a small brick-sized desktop computer, and as I recall they all seemed to be fairly under-powered.

I’d love to find a really small desktop PC that will fit on the bookshelf above my desk, but I’d like for it to be as powerful as a mid-range desktop computer.  [Read more…]

Question from Sheila:  I’m currently shopping for a Windows laptop and most of the cheaper ones say they come with Windows 11 S or Windows 11 in S mode.

The ads don’t really give any details about this version of Windows 11. What exactly does the “S”? I’ve never seen that before.

I really need to buy a new laptop because the one I have is getting pretty long in the tooth, but I’m confused about whether I should buy one with Windows 11 S on it or not.

What’s your opinion about this? I really like the low prices of the “S” machines but I want to know what I’ll be getting before I order one.  [Read more…]

Question from Barbara:  Can you explain what it means to “jailbreak” an iPhone in terms a six year old can understand?

I read something about that the other day and it went right over my head.

Is this something that I should do?  [Read more…]

Question from Sean:  My wife and I both connect our computers to the Internet via Wi-Fi.  We rented out a spare bedroom to a college student a while back, and while we were on vacation our router died.

Not wanting to have to do without Wi-Fi until we got back, our renter purchased this router and installed it.

When we got back from our trip she gave us the password she had put on the new router’s wireless network and we used it to log on to the network with our Windows PCs.

When our renter left she told us we could keep the router, and we were very grateful. The problem is we lost the paper with the Wi-Fi password  on it.

Now, our problem: My wife had to have the hard drive in her laptop replaced and when they reinstalled Windows it wiped out her password. Do you know of any way to retrieve the Wi-Fi password from the router so she can sign back on to the network? [Read more…]
