Today’s quick tech tip….
Q&A: Why are both of my PC’s screens showing the same image?
Question from Beth: I bought a 24 inch ViewSonic monitor and connected it to my HP all-in-one desktop computer to use as a second screen.
The problem I’m having is both screens are showing the same exact image even though I want to be able to keep different programs open on each screen.
How can I fix this?
Rick’s answer: Beth, what your PC is doing is duplicating (aka mirroring) the contents of the machine’s built-in screen onto the second (external) screen.
What you need to do is change that “Duplicate” setting to “Extend”.
Luckily, this is a very easy change to make. Here’s how:
1 – Press the Windows+P key combination.
Note: You should now see a new window containing four screen configuration options over on the right-hand side of the screen.
2 – Click Extend.
That’s all there is to it. Your computer’s built-in screen should still look the same as it did before, but the new external monitor should now have it’s own separate Desktop on it.
Simply launch a program you want to move to the second screen, then click on its title bar and drag it onto the second screen.
Next, repeat the step above until the second screen contains all the programs you want to have open on it.
Depending on how you want to use your dual display setup everything could well be ready for you to use as-is.
However, there are several settings tweaks you can optionally make in order to make your dual screen setup work more to your liking.
I recommend that you visit this Microsoft Support page and select your Windows version, then click the Learn how to use multiple monitors link at the bottom.
