Today’s quick tech tip….
How to launch a Windows program/app without using a mouse
If you use your Windows PC long enough there will likely come a time when you’ll need to open a program or app while your mouse isn’t working.
For example, let’s say you have a wireless mouse and you discover that its battery is dead. There’s a simple way to open your favorite programs/apps with the keyboard while you’re waiting for the opportunity to head to the store to pick up new a battery.
Or perhaps a nasty virus has stopped your mouse dead in its tracks and you need to launch your antivirus app to track the virus down and remove it.
Whatever the reason for needing to do it, you can easily open most any program or app on a Windows PC using the keyboard. Here’s how:
1 – Press the Windows key to open the Start menu.
2 – Type the name of the program or app into the Search box.
3 – After the program/app appears in the list of search results, use your keyboard’s down arrow key to select it, then press the Enter key to open it.
That’s all there is to it. Pretty simply, right?
Note: You can also simply press the Windows key and use your keyboard’s arrow keys to select the program/app’s icon right from the Start menu, then press the Enter key to open it.
However, there’s a good chance the icon for the program or app you need to open won’t be displayed on the Start menu.
That’s why I usually just skip the icon and quickly search for program/app’s name.
And now, here’s a little bonus tip…
You can also use the keyboard to find and launch a system setting as well. Just press the Windows key and type a primary keyword used with the setting, then use the down arrow key and the Enter key to open it.

When you move your PC’s mouse does the pointer move slower than a sleeping snail or zip around the screen at a clip approaching the speed of light?
If so, this post explains how to adjust the pointer speed to make it work more to your liking.
